#456 Docs: update autoupdating how-to for Linux privileged schedulers

Opened by stack72 · 5/26/2026· Shipped 5/27/2026

Problem

PR systeminit/swamp#1454 added privileged (system-level) autoupdate schedulers for Linux, but the how-to guide at content/manual/how-to/set-up-background-autoupdating.md only covers user-level scheduling and macOS LaunchDaemon.

Proposed Solution

Update the how-to guide to cover:

  • Linux root-owned binary detection and sudo swamp update --setup-auto
  • System-level systemd timer installation at /etc/systemd/system/
  • Root crontab installation via sudo crontab
  • Cross-mode cleanup behavior (switching between user and system schedulers)
  • Platform-appropriate scheduler type labels in doctor install output (systemd-system, systemd-user, cron-root, cron-user)

Alternatives

None — this is a documentation gap that should be filled.
